Child support is most often paid by non-custodial parents for support of their children. The levels of child support are established by the Alabama State Child Support Guidelines and based upon the incomes of the partners and the needs of the children. However, courts are not obligated to strictly follow these guidelines and may adjust child support awards based upon the special circumstances of the parties, but will always be certain to take the best interests of the children into consideration.

• Excessive transportation cost paid by one parent to meet visitation requirements in the divorce agreement
• Significant tuition and other education expenses incurred prior to a child's reaching the age of majority
• Assets of, or unearned income received by or on behalf of, a child or children

Child support is typically paid until a child reaches the age of majority, nineteen, unless the child gets married, is self supporting, or is emancipated. In most cases a custodial parent may petition the court for post-majority support to help pay for college.
